Published to tie in with a BBC2 series and an Imperial War Museum exhibition, this book takes readers back to the days when Hitler's U-boats patrolled the Atlantic, and imported foods were scarce. For the men, woman and children left behind during World War II, life changed dramatically. People who had never gardened before had to start growing their own fruit and vegetables, housewives had to cope with rationing, and their families had to get used to unfamiliar foods such as spam and nettle soup. The book includes the personal memories of Ruth Mott and Harry Dodson television's "Victorian" cook and gardener, respectively , as well as tales and anecdotes from many people who remember wartime cookery and "digging for victory". The Wartime Kitchen and Garden

The presenter was the horticultural lecturer, Peter Thoday, the master gardener was Harry Dodson and the director was Keith Sheather. The theme music and soundtrack was composed by Paul Reade and performed principally by Emma Johnson playing the clarinet. It won the Ivor Novello award for best TV theme music. The series began in the largely derelict walled garden at Chilton Lodge, on a freezing January morning, and followed Harry and his assistant Alison as they recreated the working kitchen garden. The work involved many repairs, from replanting the box Buxus edging and replacing the gravel walks, to reglazing the cold frames and repairing the magnificent Victorian wood-framed, brick-based glass-houses. The team were determined to use plants that the Victorian head gardener would have had available, so there were many hours of scouring old and modern catalogues and many disappointments. However, the required plants were found eventually.

As someone who loves cooking and experimenting with ingredients at hand, I have always been fascinated by the Wartime kitchens and rationing. I won't say that I wish I had gone through that, but sometimes I wonder if we are just too used to having everything at our fingertips, to having life be so easy that we have become lazy. As with everything else that I go into, I like to research and read and watch as much as I can about certain periods in time, different eras, different ways of doing things. Because I yearn for a simpler time, for a time where we may not have had everything readily available, but family came first, neighbors helped each other and really opened their homes to everyone around them. Unfortunately nowadays, and I'm speaking from my own personal experience , I've noticed that it's every man for themselves and how can we make a quick buck with the least work possible. Honestly, it seems that if there was a robot that could do everything for us, many would jump on that bandwagon pretty quick.
