40 Great Book Club Discussion Questions For Any Book

I took these book club questions to our last meeting, and WOW the difference in our discussion was amazing! The goal of your book club meeting is to have a fantastic discussion. In order to do this you must be prepared. This goes beyond simply reading the book. Below are two lists of questions that can help you in two valuable ways. You may find that with some books you can answer them all, and with others you may focus on only one or two.

Most of these are non-specific, designed to work for any book, although, of course, some will work better than others for particular books. Just pick and choose the discussion questions that work best for you and your book group, and get the conversation going! Bring the printable questions along for help. If too short, what would you add? What other title might you choose? How well does it convey what the book is about?

2. "Do you think the story was plot-based or character driven?"

The perfect book club is made up of three key things: a great reading selection, yummy snacks, and a lively discussion. The first two things are easy to accomplish — just read anything by Gillian Flynn and have a good variety of cheese available — but getting a good dialogue going may be harder than you think, which is why you need a list of general book club questions that will work for any discussion. When the conversation starts to lull, these questions can bring it back to life. Book clubs are often seen as simple social get together, a challenging way to read more books, or an excuse to drink wine on a weeknight as if you needed one, right? Sure, book clubs are a great way to meet new friends, get together with old ones, and up your monthly reading quota, but they're also a place where book-lovers can come together and discuss, dissect, and disagree over every little detail of a book. They're a space meant for lively arguments over plot twists, character flaws, and alternative endings.

This past Monday was my turn to host our Bupper Club. Our Bupper group has been just a handful of us for a few years so we decided to extend an invitation to new friends! Each of us invited a friend to join and I have to say…it seemed like a success. Disclaimer: I might have gone a little overboard trying to impress our new Bupper members. I must say…the reviews were definitely mixed. The One and Only takes place in the small college town of Walker, Texas. This town swears by one thing — football.
