But to me, this was nothing more than an overdramatic unromantic romance soap opera with little to do with the actual Napoleon wars and was also a very biased view of this era. Anyone else? I felt the same way about Anna Karenina.

The characters in War and Peace endure extreme experiences, and emerge at the end as quite different people. The miracle of the book is that the Natasha who falls in love with anyone and everyone in the ballrooms of the opening is recognisably the same woman who withdraws from society at the end. This is the story of a group of people living within a society. It understands and sympathises with those ideas but it excuses itself from repeating them. After pages, you will agree that this is the best way to write a novel. Its details are not exquisite recreations of lost practice, but ways in which an individual psychology can engage with the real world. It is about history, and both the tsar and Napoleon make awesome appearances.
The length of War and Peace is partly explained by the length of time Tolstoy spent planning, writing and polishing it. The first part of the novel was serialised in the journal The Russian Herald in , and the first edition of the complete novel published in Some acquaintances report that she complained of copying it up to twenty-one times! Reprints of the passages of War and Peace were mass produced, and some sections were even posted on billboards in Moscow for public consumption. However, there is nothing to suggest that this was anything more than a slip of the pen. In Imperial Russia, French had become the preferred language of the aristocracy, who had adopted European customs and manners following reforms introduced by Peter the Great and Catherine the Great.
