Thematic analysis - The University of Auckland

Empirical research within critical psychology is strongly associated with the use of qualitative methods. By contrast, critical approaches challenge what experiential approaches have in common with mainstream psychology — the assumption that language is only of interest as a description of inner states. Thematic Analysis Part 4 - Braun, Clarke & Hayfield

We identify key concepts and different orientations and practices, illustrating why TA is often better understood as an umbrella term, used for sometimes quite different approaches, than a single qualitative analytic approach. These are often characterized by distinctive — sometimes radically different — conceptualizations of what a theme is, as well as methods for theme identification and development, and indeed coding.

Using thematic analysis in psychology

Thematic analysis is one of the most common forms of analysis within qualitative research. Thematic analysis is best thought of as an umbrella term for a variety of different approaches, rather than a singular method. Different versions of thematic analysis are underpinned by different philosophical and conceptual assumptions and are divergent in terms of procedure. Leading thematic analysis proponents, psychologists Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke [3] distinguish between three main types of thematic analysis: coding reliability approaches examples include the approaches developed by Richard Boyatzis [4] and Greg Guest and colleagues [2] , code book approaches these includes approaches like framework analysis [5] , template analysis [6] and matrix analysis [7] and reflexive approaches [8] [9]. They describe their own widely used approach first outlined in in the journal Qualitative Research in Psychology [1] as reflexive thematic analysis. The popularity of this paper exemplifies the growing interest in thematic analysis as a distinct method although some have questioned whether it is a distinct method or simply a generic set of analytic procedures [11]. Thematic analysis is used in qualitative research and focuses on examining themes or patterns of meaning within data.

Qualitative Research in Psychology, 3, ABSTRACT: With the older adult population projected to increase substantially in the next 10 years, the incidence of chronic disease will become a significant factor in the burden of disease both globally and within the United States. The chronic disease state has been shown to decrease quality of life and the life expectancy of those individuals. In Tennessee the incidence of chronic disease, lower incomes, and education levels increases the risk of decreased quality of life and increased mortality in the older adult population.
