The Proper Lady and the Woman Writer by Poovey - AbeBooksUnusually it w the male character, the hero Jin, that I found I had little patience for. This just unnecessarily stretched the story on and on and I was beginning to get bored and just wanted them to sail away in to their happily ever after. However, what really kept my interest and will propel me quite happily to the next book in the series, is a series of letters between Lady Justice, a heretofore unknown lady journalist and Peregrine, the leader of the secret Falcon club who work for the crown finding lost people, and the organisation that Jin belongs to. They mock and tease and flirt with one another, whilst Lady Justice threatens to bring the organisation down by revealing its members. In general a good book, the romance was passionate and there some aspects of this that I really enjoyed and will tempt me to read the next in the series.

The Proper Lady and the Woman Writer by Poovey
No Proper Lady is the hands down, weirdest historical romance I have read. If you take all perceived notions of historical romance and mix in a weird helping of Victorian occult, tentacle-wielding There is something about this book that really caught my attention. The cover is dreadful - the cursive font and the lady taking her dress off give the impression that it is going to be some sort of Isabel Cooper lives in Boston with her boyfriend and a houseplant she's kept alive for over a year now.

She maintains her guise as a mild-mannered project manager working in legal publishing. She only travels through time the normal way and has never fought a demon, but she can waltz.
Leo Harrow, Earl of Barrington, is a regular subject of the scandal rags. Once an unrepentant pleasure seeker, he knows that young ladies are warned to look the other way when he enters a room. But when he comes face to face with a woman from his past—the one that got away—he will do anything to keep the rumors about him at bay. Or risk losing her forever… Genevieve Camden is no stranger to Leo's seductive ways. Years ago she was fooled into believing that he cared about her…and now that he's back on the ballroom floor, he appears to be making amends.
Entered according to the Act of Congress, in the year , by G. In preparing a book of etiquette for ladies, I would lay down as the first rule, "Do unto others as you would others should do to you. True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be impolite. Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politeness consists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us; a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; there can be no true politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility. Many believe that politeness is but a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation.
